Extremely severe maternal morbidity (ESMM) encompasses a spectrum of life-threatening conditions and severe complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. While maternal mortality rates have garnered significant attention, understanding and addressing ESMM is crucial for improving maternal health outcomes and reducing adverse events in obstetric care. This review aims to examine the concept of extremely severe maternal morbidity, including its definition, risk factors, clinical manifestations, management strategies, and implications for maternal health. By exploring the spectrum of conditions classified as ESMM and their impact on maternal well-being, the research seeks to enhance awareness, recognition, and management of severe maternal complications.Extremely severe maternal morbidity represents a significant challenge in obstetric care, requiring a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to mitigate risks and improve outcomes for pregnant and postpartum women.
