Hepatic Abscess and their Complications –Clinco-Epidemiological Study

Abstract

Background: Hepatic abscess is a common disorder with serious complications if untreated. The hepatic abscess is frequent disorder in  with different patterns and etiology in various areas.           

Objective: To assess the common etiologies and management strategies of cases with hepatic abscess in Sulaymaniyah governorate.

Patients and Methods: This study was an observational cross sectional study implemented in Kurdistan center for Gastroenterology and Hepatology (KCGH) in Sulaymaniyah governorate-Kurdistan region/ during the period of thirty six months from 1st of February, 2020 to 31st of July, 2022 on convenient sample of thirty patients with hepatic abscess. The hepatic abscess was diagnosed radiologically through ultrasonography and/or computerized tomography. The treatment was prescribed by both Gastrointestinal Surgeon and Gastroenterologist.

Results: Mean age of patients with hepatic abscess was (44 years) with high predominance of female gender. High C-reactive protein was found in 76.7% of patients and positive fascioloa IgG was detected in 66.7% of them. The culture revealed positive in 5 patients (13.3% E. coli and 3.3% staph. aureus). Medical treatment was administered to all patients, while the surgery was done for 23.3% of them and percutaneous drainage was done for 13.3% of them only.  

Conclusions: The common etiology of hepatic abscess cases is Fasciola hepatica and the medical therapy by triaclabendazole is the appropriate treatment option of hepatic abscess.
