Pattern of Injuries Associated with Motorcycle Accidents in Patients Admitted to a Regional Emergency Department

Abstract

Background: Road transport traumatism involving motorcyclists characterized by high frequency heavy combined and multiple damage . High speed and vulnerability drivers determine specific spectrum damage requiring attraction multidisciplinary brigades specialists hospital ambulance medical help .

Objectives: Study spectrum , structure and degree gravity injuries in patients hospitalized in the department emergency medical help after motorcycle accidents .

Patients and methods : Conducted retrospective analysis stories illnesses of 215 patients admitted to emergency in order with injuries as a result accidents on motor transport . Severity states evaluated By ISS (Injury Severity Score) scale . Recorded localization fractures , presence craniocerebral injuries , damages organs chest cells and abdominal cavities , as well as need for operational interventions and intensive therapy .

Results : The study group composed mainly of males (87.4%), average age was28.4 ± 8.2 years . Isolated injuries were detected in 32.1% of victims , combined and multiple - in 67.9%. The most frequent localization damage turned out to be injuries musculoskeletal apparatus (74.4%), among which prevailed fractures bones lower limbs (52.1%). Combined craniocerebral injury different degrees gravity diagnosed in 48.8% of patients , injuries chest cells - 29.3%, damage organs abdominal cavities - in 16.3%. Average score By ISS scale was 18.2 ± 6.4. The need for anti-shock events and emergencies surgical interventions occurred in 41.4% of patients . Overall hospital mortality amounted to 6.5%.

Conclusions : Motorcycles accidents are characterized by predominance combined somatic and skeletal high- impact injuries score gravity according to ISS, that requires improvements protocols primary sorting inspection and routing patients .
