Glycemic Control of Type II Diabetes Mellitus in Karbala Governorate/Iraq

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a prevalent non-communicable disease in Iraq. Glycemic control of Iraqi diabetic patients is the main concern of physicians.

Objective: This study aimed to measure the prevalence of glycemic control among type diabetic patients attending primary public health care center in Karbala governorate.

Patients and methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted at Hey Al-Amil primary public health care center in Karbala city/Iraq for duration of six months from1st of January to 30th of June, 2025 on sample of 250 type 2 diabetic patients..

Results: Mean HbA1c level of studied type 2 diabetic patients was (7.9%); 44.8% of them had good glycemic control and 55.2% of them had poor glycemic control. The logistic regression analysis revealed that low educational level, no car ownership and unemployment of type 2 diabetic patients were significant predictors of poor glycemic control (p≤0.05).

Conclusion: Prevalence of poor glycemic control of type 2 diabetic patients in Karbala city is high.
